I have often fallen into the trap of “passive” writing practice, meaning that I read more books about writing than participating in active writing. Once I recognized that I am a creative, it was easier for me to pare down my reading list. Two great books that resonate and help me approach writing in a relaxed yet purposeful way are:
I also learned to pay close attention to detail in nature through making a Moon Journal with my son. Some of the scenes in my stories are taken directly from that experience.
For poetry, Georgia Heard is excellent. Never mind that she teaches elementary students. Her audience is what makes poetry so possible to approach. Perhaps this is obvious, but poetry is three things: feelings, images and music/rhythm.
